Pre-stretch is the process of stretching stretch wrap film before it is applied to a load. When using a stretch wrap machine, the film threads through two rollers that are spinning at two different speeds, stretching the film between the two. Stretch wrap machines typically stretch film up to 250% of the original length, reducing the amount of film needed to wrap a pallet.
There are benefits to pre-stretching film before it is applied to a pallet. Pre-stretched film increases film strength, memory, and consistency while reducing overall cost.
Stretch film is one of the largest components of waste in a warehouse or distribution center. The best way to make sure you don’t waste film is to properly pre-stretch it. But how do you know you’re doing it right?
Use the calculator below to see what the optimum levels are for the loads you wrap each week. If you’re not reaching these numbers, give us a call and we will help you calibrate your machine or find a machine that better meets your needs, saves you money, and reduces the amount of plastic film waste in our landfills.
*The calculations are based on what we’ve experienced as the typical pallet load and film usage of our customers:
The load is 40” x 48” x 72”’ - 12 revolutions are done per load - Film is 80 gauge, 6,000 ft per roll - Cost is $76.00
By not properly pre-stretching your film, it's possible that you are wasting more than 50% of your stretch film, resulting in large amounts of waste and money lost. We specialize in helping our clients Package With Less by finding ways to use less material, resulting in less cost to you. If you're concerned you aren't efficiently stretch wrapping loads,
. We find the most optimal packaging solution for you whether that be a film change, new stretch wrapper, or using our packaging lab to find the proper load containment.
