Paper Manufacturer - Case Study

The Challenge

A paper manufacturer was interested in finding ways to cut costs within their facility and packaging process. Rocket Industrial offered to perform a free Packaging Health Assessment to discover areas for improvement.

What is a Packaging Health Assessment? This is an audit performed for potential and current clients of Rocket Industrial of an organization’s packaging equipment and processes in relation to its goals. It typically takes a few hours, involves a team of packaging experts and engineers, and does not disrupt production at your facility in any way. Our team then reviews the findings and offers recommendations for ways to reduce costs and improve packaging efficiency. This often results in substantial savings and material usage reduction.

Goals:

  • Find areas to reduce packaging costs.
  • Implement recommended solutions that match goals while keeping products protected.

The Rocket Solution

While on-site, our team performed an analysis of the stretch wrap being used as well as the current stretch wrapper settings. Back in our packaging lab, our engineers tested alternative stretch films on the company’s typical load configuration. After reviewing with the client, it was recommended to switch from the current 90 gauge economy wrap to a 75 gauge high performance wrap. A sample of the proposed high performance film was then sent to test on site.

The current stretch wrapper settings were also modified to wrap loads more consistently.

Results

After implementing Rocket’s recommendations, the cost per load decreased and wrap consistency increased. By changing to a lower gauge, less material was used per load resulting in less waste.

  • 25% cost reduction on yearly stretch film spend ($25,000 savings)
  • Uses 7 tons less of plastic annually
